Herbert was born about 1884. He is the son of William Laver and Ellen Clarke. His birth was registered at Bradfield, Berkshire registration district in the first quarter of the year. Bradfield district covered an extensive area. In the 1891 census it notes his place of birth as Reading, Berkshire.
At the 1891 census the family were resident at 63 Weldale Street, Reading (parish of St Mary). Present were father William C Laver (36, seedsman's clerk, born Lostwithiel, Cornwall), mother Ellen L Clarke (29) Herbert N V C Laver (7, scholar, born Reading) and younger sister Emily M B Laver (2, born Wokingham, Berkshire). Weldale Street was just off Caversham Road, Reading, where Herbert's maternal grandparents were residing at that time. The family had one lodger (a confectioner) at this census.
In January 1901, before the census of that year, Herbert's father died, at Reading. Herbert would have been about 17 at the time.
He died in 1906. His death was registered in the third quarter of the year at Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. He was aged 22.
