Notes on AMBROSE LAWING: In the 1850 Census of Subdivision 4, Washington Co., TN, there is an Ambrose lawing, 24, b. ~1826, living with what looks like parents William Lawing, 53, Wheelwright, and Elizabeth 56. Under Ambrose, also a wheelwright, is Sarah, 18, and Isaac L., 2. Ambrose applied for marriage license No. 224 March 28, 1848. He married Sarah E. Deaton on Apr. 2, 1848, by C Longmire, Justice of the Peace. Washington Co., TN. In 1862, a Tax list is found for Ambrose Lawing. Land is 502 acres. Valuation is $400. Ambrose Lawing, age 40, enlisted in 1864 in the 3rd Mounted Infantry. (Union) There is an 1870 Census that shows that the family is living in District 18, Washington Co., TN. Father Ambrose is 44, Sarah 39, William W. 16, Mary M. 14, John W. 10, Sarah C. 8, Anna A. 2, Daniel A. 4 months. In the 1900 Census, there is a Sarah, 60 years old, living with daughter Sarah C. and Aaron Ingle. While no proof that this is Sarah’s family, it certainly seems to be. Ambrose is a gun smith, real estate born $1500, personal $471. He was born in NC, as was his wife. All the children were born in Tennessee. Neither parent can read or write. An Ambrose Lawing, b. ~1826, d. July 4, 1872, Flag Pond, Unicoi Co., TN is buried in Guinn Cemetery #3. However, findagrave does not list Sarah C. as a daughter. It also does not list an Isaac. There is another Ambrose Lawing living in the area and I am questioning whoever put the names of the children on the website. Here is what it lists:
