John Scott Lawing was a Confederate veteran serving in Company G, 34th North Carolina Infantry Regiment. He was a farmer in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, where he enlisted on 30 September 1861. He was wounded on 27 June 1862 at the Battle of Gaine's Mill, Virginia. His wounds kept him from service until he returned to duty some time before 1 March 1863.

John was wounded again at the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in July 1863. He retired to duty prior to 1 September 1863.

John was wounded a third time on 12 May 1864 at the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse, Virginia. Once again, he returned to duty sometime in July or August 1864, and remained with his regiment until the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse on 9 April 1865. Only 138 members of his regiment were left at the surrender.

Enlisting during the first year of the War, surviving several major engagements, returning to his regiment after each of three wounds, all represent the character of the man and his devotion to his family and nation.

Also serving with John in Company G was his uncle, John Middleton Lawing.
