Biography

When Hubbard Lawrence was born on March 7, 1773, in Winchester, New Hampshire, his father, Micah, was 33 and his mother, Eunice, was 27. He married Mary (Polly) Goss on February 22, 1801, in his hometown. They had nine children in 14 years. He died on September 20, 1816, in St Johnsbury, Vermont, at the age of 43, and was buried there.

From the genealogy of the family of John Lawrence of Wisset, in Suffolk, England, and of Watertown and Groton, Massachusetts page 105 and 106 "Deacon Hubbard Lawrence, an affectionate Husband and faithful Father, an exemplary Christian, an Officer of the Church, and a valuable Member of Society, died Sept. 20, 1816, aged 43 years." He went from Winchester, NH, to St Johnsbury, Vt. about 1800, and there resided until his death. He was a man of warm and generous feelings, good sense and sound judgement. He was actively engaged in the organazation of the first church of Christ in the town, of which he was elected a deacon. Mrs. Mary Lawrence married for her second husband, Jan. 14, 1823, Selah Pomroy, Esg., of Stanstead C.E., to which place she removed; where also she died, April 17, 1837, uttering, with her latest breath, "I am happy; I am going ot my Savior." The words of discoursd at her funeral, "Blessed are the dead which die in the Loard: yea, saith the Spirit; for they rest from their lab ors; and their works do follow them," were most happily chosen, and fully expressive, as a memorial of her life and death in Christ. Selah Pomoroy Esq., died Dec. 23, 1856, at Stanstead, C.E., aged eighty-one years.
