"[James H. Kast] was one of the oldest permanent residents of Haney town, coming to this town in the spring of 1851. Land had been entered by other parties before this date, but no permanent settlement made. He was born in New York State, in 1804. When twenty-two years of age he went to Medina Co., Ohio, remaining until 1845, when he went to La Fayette Co., Wis. In 1850 he came with his brother Chauncey to Scott town, this county, and in 1851 entered 160 acres of land on section 12, Haney town, where he has since resided. James Hale Kast had eleven children, only four of whom are living—Lois C., widow of Henry Crow; Mary J., wife of B.S. Hasking; Eleanor L., wife of George Burton, and Ira F."[11]

Death

Obituary from Prairie du Chien Union newspaper, June 1881.
"Mrs. Louisa Kast, wife of Jas. Kast, died at her residence in the town of Haney, May 19th 1881, aged 70 years. Mrs Kast was the first female white settler in the town of Haney, having arrived at Mineral Point from Ohio in 1845 and at Haney in 1850. The old lady was hale and hearty, walking one and a half miles to church before her death."

Research notes

  • Marriage record: James Kast and his family moved from western New York to Medina County, Ohio in the late 1820s, about the same time he married Lefa Louise Lawrence. It is claimed that they married in Medina County but no record is found there—or in Wayne County, Ohio where I was referred by Medina County. Similarly, a search of the places they lived back in New York—the towns of Lima and Penfield, and the counties of Ontario and Livingston—have turned up nothing. Kast-241
  • The above marriage search was undertaken partly to confirm Lefa's surname "Lawrence." A family who was close to them, the Ira Lawrences, was also not found in those searches. Ira Lawrence married James's sister Polly Maria Kast around the same year as James and Lefa married. So far, there's no evidence of Lefa and Ira being related. Kast-241
