Biography

William Lawrence was born in 1812 and baptised on 31 May 1812 at Ware, Hertfordshire, England. He was the son of James Lawrence and Sarah Morrel.^[1]

Research Notes

There were three William Lawrences born about 1812 in Ware so it is difficult to distinguish between them in later records. Two William Lawrences of the right age appear in the 1841 census at Ware and three appear in the 1851 census at Ware. Apart from the above William, the others were:

• William Lawrence son of William & Mary Lawrence, born on 25 Dec 1811 and baptised on 7 Jul 1815 (the same day as his sister Sarah).^[2]
• William Lawrence son of Francis & Ann Lawrence baptised on 14 Mar 1813.^[3] He was a Shoemaker in Baldock Street, Ware. He married Sarah Harvey in 1839 and they had 12 children.^[4]

One William Lawrence appears in the 1841 and 1851 census, living at Crib Street, Ware with Elizabeth Warby. He was a Carpenter and is listed as Widowed.

One William Lawrence appears in the 1851 census, living at Bridge Foot, Ware (presumably the location of the Toll gate). He was a Toll gate keeper and is listed as Married but his wife is not known.
