Biography

Robert was born in 1843. He was the son of Joseph Lawrence and the grandson of Britsh soldier He passed away in 1862. Date of birth estimated from census records and are conflicting. In the census of 1850 he was 7 years old.[1] However, Mahalia has a documented birthdate of 1844. In 1860 he was listed as 16.[2] When he enlisted in 1861 he was described as 20 years old. Robert was a volunteer, and it is possible that he misrepresented his age because he wanted to follow older brother to the Civil War. He enlisted on 2 feb 1862 and left Augusta, Maine with Company A 14th Maine Infantry. Less than 4 months later he was a POW at Ship Island, MS, and died of typhoid fever. It is distressing to think that Robert was probably only 15 or 16 when he died. ,Sister Mahalia has a documented birth date of 1844, and she was noted to be two years older than Robert in the 1850 census.
