A SOLDIER MADE HAPPY
The Republican party can never be charged with ingratitude to the soldier, and no one is more ready to rejoice than we are to hear of their merited success. The government can never pay her defenders too much.
Absalom L. Lawrence, or Light, as he is better known, of Marietta, on Tuesday, received a check for eighteen hundren and twenty dollars, back pay, from July, 1865 to April 3d, 1884 and allowance of per month hence forward. He enlisted February 11th, 1864 in Gen. Welsh's 45th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, Company B., Captain Deibler.
He was captured June 7th, 1864, at the battle of Cold Harbor, and confined in Andersonville prison six months, when he became exchanged. He was mustered out July 17th 1865. Whilst engaged in throwing up breastworks, he contracted hernia, and what he endured cannot be told.
We are glad to quote the above from the "Examiner," and especially the concluding sentence of the first paragraph "The government can never pay her defenders too much."
