Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Mary (Lawrence) Fraeme was a Virginia colonist.

Mary was born about 1620. Her surname at birth may not have been Lawrence. The MilesFiles entry on her [4] states that Mary --?-- married (1) William Lawrence, who died in 1650, and (2) John Frame, who died before 17 Dec 1655.

In 1655, Mary was granted probate of her second husband John Frame's will:[1]

At a Court held at [?Westovers], December 17 1655
A probate is granted to Mrs Mary fframe of ye[?] last will [?be Law] of for late husband Ca. Jo. Fframe dec’d cont’d in Co E
The [?Court] doth hereby grant & allow unto Mrs Mary fframe one third of ye lands of her late husband during her Life.

In February 1655/56, Mary received a Court judgment for tobacco, possibly a debt due her husband's estate:[2]

At a Court held 4 February 1655/56
”Justice [?or “Curtis”?] Land conferred Judgment to Mrs Mary fframe for 700 lb tob[acco] & cask to be paid her or her heirs w/(?) costs --?--.”

Mary Frame wrote her will on 2 March 1655/56; it was proved in Court on 6 March.

At the time she wrote her will, Mary's daughter Ann appears to have been of age to inherit. The other five children were minors:

  1. Ann Lawrence
  2. Arthur Lawrence (? Frame)
  3. William Lawrence
  4. James Lawrence
  5. Sarah Lawrence
  6. John Frame

Research Notes

If I am interpreting the handwriting correctly, the probate of John Frame's will occured at Westover Plantation. From Wikipedia's entry [5]:

"Westover Plantation is a historic colonial tidewater plantation located on the north bank of the James River in Charles City County, Virginia. Established in c. 1730–1750, it is the homestead of the Byrd family of Virginia. State Route 5, a scenic byway, runs east–west to the north of the plantation, connecting the independent cities of Richmond and Williamsburg."
