Biography

'New York state flag'
Mary (Lawrence) Walton was a New Yorker.

Mary Lawrence, the third daughter of Thomas Lawrence and Mary (Unknown) and most difficult of the three daughters to prove According to Furman, she was born between 1640 and 1650.[2] The Great Migration Begins suggests she could have been born as late as 1652.[3]

A marriage license was issued for Thomas Walton and (Unlisted First Name) Lawrence on 16 December 1671 in Staten Island, New York.[4]

Mary and Thomas had at least five children all born in Staten Island:[5][6]

  1. Thomas Walton (b.1682; d. 1728), m. 1) Mary Stillwell; m. 2) Martha (Unknown)
  2. William Walton (b. 1675; d. 1747), m. Mary Santvoort
  3. Mary Walton (b. 1676; d. 1742), m. William Ricketts
  4. Matthew Walton (b. 1678; d. abt 1713), m. Rebecca Lockerman
  5. John Walton (b. 1680)

All of these children would have been fathered by Thomas Walton by 1689, for during that year, he was arrested in New York for sedition during Leisler's Rebellion. Thomas Walton died intestate between 8 July and 12 December 1689 in Richmond County, Staten Island.[7][8]
Mary (Lawrence) Walton married 2) John White about 1703. She is referred to as 'Mary White' in relation to a matter concerning her step-mother, Mary (Ferguson) Lawrence of Newtown in 1704.[9]
According to Phillips (1945), who refers to Mary (Lawrence) Walton-White as 'Esther', Mary was born about 1750 and died in 1732.[10]

Evidence for Mary Lawrence as Daughter of Thomas Lawrence and Wife of Thomas Walton

Robert Furman (1940) used records, including a marriage license for Thomas Walton and (Unknown) Lawrence, sources indicating that Thomas Walton's wife's name was Mary, land surveys listing the names Thomas Lawrence and Thomas Walton, Capt. Thomas Lawrence being among the persons who inventoried Thomas Walton's estate in 1689, in addition to the fact that Walton married a Lawrence girl combine to provide reasonable proof to suggest that Mary was the daughter of Thomas Lawrence and the wife of Thomas Walton. Furthermore, Furman reports that Mary 'White' and John and Daniel Lawrence participated in a court proceeding related to their step-mother, Mary (Ferguson) Lawrence, and in 1708, deeds were witnessed by Matthew Walton, a son of Thomas and Mary (Lawrence) Walton. The Mary 'White' court proceeding supports the idea that Mary (Lawrence) Walton wed John White about 1703, and Furman suggests that this led to Mary losing her identity as both a Lawrence and a Walton.[11]

Hi Beryl, I have been doing the research on this Mary (Lawrence) Walton-White. I have checked my references and have changed her second marriage name to 'White'. I would not delete this second marriage name as someone may eventually find more information regarding this second marriage of Mary's [refs 9 & 10]. There was a great deal of time spent last year clarifying this Lawrence/Walton line to Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Originally, someone had erroneously listed a 'Waldren' from Holland. We now at least have the line corrected from Thomas Lawrence to FDR through the corrected Walton line. There is Netherlands ancestry through the women that the Walton men married. When I get a minute, or more, I will return to the Walton family to work on their various profiles. The line to FDR, though, has been corrected and sourced.

Hi Barry...just a quick response to your Charlemagne observation. While Western Europeans may have possibly inherited a cell, neuron, or SNP from Charlemagne because his descendants are ubiquitous, the issue here is a 'proven line' to Charlemagne, which Thomas Lawrence and his Lawrence siblings have. This is no different from the work that the Magna Carta Baron team is doing to determine 'proven' descent from a MCB to a 17th century, or even current descendant. So, the 'Lawrence-Bull' line is a proven line of descent. I'd love to say I'm a direct descendant of William the Conqueror, or Robert the Bruce, but I cannot without evidence.

I've adjusted her current last name to that of linked husband (Walton) and that of her sons (Walton). Left Smith in other last name.

1st sentence: statistically, we are *all* Charlemagne descendants ... at least, anyone with a single recent European ancestor is...

Is there a good reason for the surname Smith? Notes and GM lists her husbands as Lawrence and White.

I find no reason for it. And considering Robert Charles Anderson does not list any such marriage, I think it should be removed.
