Biography

Born to the daughter of Sgt. Thomas D. Lawrence of the Revolutionary War (Virginia) and his first wife Savarah Hammond,

NOTE: Please edit this profile to reflect the life of Nancy Lawrence She was incorrectly assumed to be the wife of Pleasant Carver. They were never married. There are currently no records showing who the elder Pleasant Carver (Pleasant Carver Sr.) was married to.

Nancy Lawrence was married to Rev. Thomas Porter.

The person, Nancy Lawrence who was the daughter of Revolutionary War soldier Thomas Lawrence has been documented (with sources) to have married someone other than Pleasant Carver (As of 7/6/2023, this information is being corrected on the Carver side.).

An excerpt from the book, "Our Lawrence Ancestry - The family of Henry Grandison Lawrence - Southern Illinois Pioneer 1850", by Robert Garrett showing the family of Nancy Lawrence is HERE and shows that she married Thomas Porter and not Pleasant Carver, Sr.:

NANCY LAWRENCE, b. Abt. 1783, Louisa Co., KY; d. December 12, 1831, Logan or Hopkins Co, KY; m. THOMAS PORTER, June 15, 1808, Logan Co., KY; b. May 12, 1788, Prince Edward Co., VA; d. May 20, 1839, Todd Co., KY.

After Nancy's death in 1831, her husband Rev. Thomas Porter Find A Grave: Memorial #23019855 married her sister Jane Lawrence in 1838. His Find A Grave memorial page shows a link to the real Nancy Lawrence with a notation that her burial site has not been found.

Pleasant Carver did not marry Nancy Lawrence

  • Any surname Carver profiles linked to this information should delete the links showing Nancy Lawrence Carver. She was incorrectly shown to be the wife of Pleasant Carver Sr.
  • A Find A Grave: Memorial #116782194 page for a Nancy Carver married to Pleasant Carver currently reflects the name "Nancy Lawrence Carver" and will be corrected. I have contacted the person maintaining the page about the contradictory information surrounding the memorial for Nancy "Lawrence" Carver (which is also linked to three of the children of Pleasant Carver. It will be changed to Nancy (UNKNOWN) Carver. We agree that the memorial page is in error and will be fixed. The maiden name "Lawrence" will be removed. The biography that refers to her as being Nancy Lawrence, daughter of a Revolutionary War vet will be deleted. The rightful memorial page for Nancy Lawrence, daughter of the Revolutionary War veteran is Find A Grave: Memorial #214926669 and is linked to her husband's memorial page.

Also Pertaining to the FindAGrave memorial:

The Works Project Administration recorded that the gravesite details for the person currently showing as Nancy Lawrence Carver was actually for "Nancy Carver" (no maiden name). They reported she was born December 17, 1790, died December 17 1853, was buried in Union Mills Cemetery, Union, Mahaska Co., Iowa. There is no link to Pleasant Carver Sr. on her memorial page but three of Pleasant Carver's children are linked on that memorial page and so someone assumes this is Pleasant's wife. Whether this is truly Pleasant's wife, is yet to be uncovered. However Nancy's memorial page does show that the readable parts of her tombstone inscription are: "Nancy Wife of P. Carver, Died ?????????, Aged 63 Years." The date of birth and date of death shown may or may not be correct for Nancy Unknown who married Pleasant Carver. No records have been shown for a marriage of Pleasant Carver Sr. to Nancy.

I am also unable to find any sources that indicate Nancy (unknown) who married Pleasant Carver Sr. was the daughter of Thomas D. Lawrence and his first wife Savarah either. I do find records that a Nancy Lawrence married Rev. Thomas Porter and after she died, he married Nancy's sister. My personal opinion is that Nancy's surname currently shown as "Lawrence" should be changed to "Unknown". The FAG notation alone for Nancy still doesn't give sources that Nancy's birth surname was Lawrence either -- just that a Nancy Carver lived and died. Family Search records show several genealogies for a Nancy Lawrence married to Pleasant Carver -- all with different birth/death dates and no sources either which only adds to the confusion. The link on Pleasant Carver's page to my old website that was used as a source also refers to his wife Nancy as Nancy Unknown.

P.S. The Works Project Administration (https://iowawpagraves.org/view.php?id=320692) recorded the grave inscription for the alleged Nancy Lawrence Carver (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/116782194/nancy-carver) to be only "Nancy Carver" (no maiden name) and with different birth/death years that what is currently reported on memorial page for her FAG. It is a possibility this could be the Nancy Carver who was married to Pleasant Carver (d. 1829), but unless a source is found, to tie that Nancy Carver to Nancy Lawrence, daughter of Revolutionary War soldier Thomas Lawrence, it seems a big stretch. I have requested any information that can show the Nancy Carver memorial information is correct in showing her as the Nancy who was the daughter of the Revolutionary War soldier Thomas D. Lawrence. 7/2/2023.

What's the evidence that this Nancy is the daughter of Thomas/Savarah? Thomas Porter married Nancy Lawrence in 1808 in Todd County. She died in 1831, he married Jane Lawrence in 1833. Their descendants all believe them to be sisters, daughters of Thomas, although I do not have a specific source for that.
