Biography

Martha was born about 1840, the daughter of Thompson Lawson and Susan ____ (possibly Susanna/Susan Bullin). [1] [2]

Martha's marriage and death record both show her mother as "Susan Lawson," and her 1900 census, death certificate, and gravestone show her born on 07 Apr 1840; but her father did not marry Susanna/Susan Bullin until 31 Dec 1842, so it may be that Martha was Thompson's child by another mother, or it may be that Thompson and Susanna were in a common-law marriage before it was solemnized in 1842.
All other census records for Martha show her born between about 1841 and about 1847.

She married on 18 Feb 1870 at Danbury, North Carolina to William Thomas "Tandy" Mabe [3] and they had children: [4] [5] [6] [7]

  1. Susan Ann, b. abt. 1867, m. Levi Franklin Sands, d. abt. 1896?
  2. Ruth Emma, b. 17 Sep 1869, m. James Noel Rhodes, d. 28 Apr 1960
  3. Richard Johnson, b. 28 Aug 1871, m. Cora Frances Lawson, d. 03 Mar 1950
  4. Lillia Maude, b. 11 May 1875, m. Robert Joyce Bennett, d. 05 May 1968
  5. Mary Lula, b. 18 Oct 1877, m. Rufus Benjamin Abbott, d. 16 Aug 1943
  6. William Columbus, b. 16 Jun 1879, m. Pencie Ann Lawson, d. 09 Sep 1951
  7. Martha Lee Norah, b. 06 Jul 1883, m. Walter Giddeon Snow, d. 09 Mar 1952
Tandy and Martha's marriage record is dated three years after the birth of Susan, who is identified in her marriage record as Martha's daughter. It is not known if Susan and Ruth were Tandy's children by another mother, or if Tandy and Martha were in a common-law marriage that wasn't solemnized until after their first two children were born.

Martha passed away on 06 Jul 1919 at Sauratown, North Carolina [8] and is buried with her husband at Saint Mark United Methodist Church Cemetery in Forsyth County, North Carolina. [9]

Research Notes

Martha's great grandfather John "Black Eye" Lawson came from that part of Brunswick County that is now Bedford County, Virginia. His family was among "the Falling River Lawsons" that had settled along the Falling River in what is now Appomattox County and settled in that part of Surrey County that would eventually become Stokes County.

During the same time period, Martha's husband 's second great grandfather John "Goober Pea" Lawson came from the Bradley Creek area of Brunswick County that is now Halifax County, Virginia and settled in that part of Surrey County.

  • Rowan County formed 1753 one of Province of North Carolina's original counties
  • Surrey County formed 1771 from Rowan County
  • Stokes County formed 1789 from Surrey County

The two John Lawsons may be related, farther up their family trees, but John "Goober Pea" Lawson's father has not yet been identified.

There is an account by James E. Mabe that shows this Martha as the Martha Jane Lawson who was the daughter of James and Nelly Lawson, [10] but the Martha Lawson who married Tandy Mabe is shown in her marriage and death record to be the daughter of Susan Lawson.
