Philip was born in 1728. He was the son of George Lawson and Patronella Unknown.[1]
He married Barbara Elders on 1 January 1757 at Egton "Philip Lawson tailor and Barbara Elders spinster".[2]
Philip died in 1833 and was buried on 11 June 1833 at Whitby. His great age of 104 was noted in the register.[3][4] It was also reported in newspapers: "On the 11th instant, at Whitby, at the extraordinary age of 104 years, Mr. Philip Lawson. He was the father of Mr John Lawson, sen., of the same place, who has lately retired from the drapery business. His faculties continued almost perfect until death; and in conversation he was very lively, cheerful, and full of anecdote. He was also very active, for after he had attained his hundredth year he walked from Whitby to his native village, Egton, a distance of six miles; and since the erection of the lighthouse at Whitby, in 1831, he has three times ascended an to the top of the building unassisted. He has left three children (out of 7), seventeen grandchildren, and forty-six great-grand-children"[5]
