Biography

Ann, daughter of Joseph, a labourer and Mary Lawton was baptised at St John's church, Ashton-Hayes, Cheshire, England on 29 March 1854 [1][2].

In 1861 Ann (7) was living with her parents Joseph (26, born Duddon, Cheshire, an agricultural labourer) and Mary (born Ashton, 35) and their children Mary (11), Margaret (9), Joseph (4) and Sarah (2) - all the children were born in Ashton [3][4].

In 1871 Ann (16) was a housemaid in Edwin Dodd's household at Mouldsworth, Cheshire. Edwin was a farmer [5].

Ann's marriage to Charles Nield was registered at Nantwitch, Cheshire in the September quarter of 1883 [6]

In 1881 Ann (26) and Charles (28, an Agricultural Labourer) were living in Manley with their children Emily (6, born Birch Heath), Mary E (4, born Ashton), Joseph (2, born Manley) and Sarah (an infant, born Manley) [all places in Cheshire] [7].

In 1891 Charles was a Railway Plate layer. The family, now including children Elizabeth (17), Emily (16), Joseph (12), Sarah (10), Charles (8, born Cheshire), Ann (6, born Ashton) and Frances (Nield) Blake (1889-1940) (1) were living at Chester Road, Oakmere, Delamare [8]

In 1901 Charles was still a Railway Plate layer, the children were Elizabeth (27, born Tarporley), Emily (26, born Taporley) Mary (24, born Ashton), Joseph (22, born Manley), Sarah (20, born Manley), Charles (18, born Manley), Frances (Nield) Blake (1889-1940) and George (7, born Oakmere, and they were still living at Oakmere, Delamere.

In 1911 Ann (59) was a widow, was living with her son Charles (27, a General Labourer) in Cote Brook, Eaton by Tarporley, Rushton, Cheshire together with her daughter Sarah (29) [9].

Research notes

Given that Joseph was 13 when his first 'daughter' was born it is highly unlikely that she was, in fact, his daughter.

Ann's date and place of death is uncertain. It may be research into her son, Charles or other children may indicate a place of death.

Are you related to Ann? Or have another interest in this profile? I would be very happy to hand over management to you.

If you are related to Ann, have you had, or would you be willing to have, a DNA test? I'm trying to find descendants of the ancestors of Vincent Joseph Maurice Morris Gill (1904-1975) and his wife Louisa (Blake) Gill (1911-1978) as their descendents' DNA show a close relationship with my grandfather John Edward Grey (1887-1944). If you are descended from Ann, and I could compare your DNA to my mother's, we could find out whether the Neild or Lawson families contained her grandfather.
