Biography

Mary Lutton [sic] was born in 1847 at Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire, the twin daughter of John Lawton and Sarah Lawton formerly Harman. ^[1]

She was baptised on 15 August 1847 at Bradford on Avon with twin sister Martha. The family was then living at New Town and father John was a gardener. ^[2]

Her twin Martha died in 1847 in infancy.

In the 1851 census Mary Lewton [sic] was living with her parents and siblings at Newtown, Bradford on Avon. She was aged 4 years. ^[3]

In 1861 the family was still at the same address. Mary, aged 13, was attending school. ^[4]

In 1871 Mary was still living with her parents at Newtown, Bradford on Avon. Aged 23, she was a dressmaker. ^[5]

In 1881, after the death of both parents, Mary and her bachelor brother John Lawton were both living at Newtown, Bradford on Avon. John, aged 47, was working as a grocer. Mary, aged 33, was a dressmaker. ^[6]

In 1891 John and Mary were living at 59 [Top of] Wine St, Bradford on Avon. John, aged 56 [sic], was a gardener and Mary, aged 43, was a housekeeper. ^[7]

In 1901 their address was shown as 60 Wine St, Bradford on Avon. John, aged 67, was a self employed market gardener. Mary was aged 53. Also living with them was niece Mary Lawton, aged 13. She was the daughter of brother Alfred and his wife Charlotte Lawton. ^[8]

In 1911 John and Mary were living at 11 Church St, Bradford on Avon. John, aged 77, was still a market gardener. Mary was aged 63. ^[9]

John Lawton died in 1919 aged 86 years. ^[10]

Mary Lawton died in 1931 aged 83 years. ^[11]

From 1931 Index of Wills and Administrations – LAWTON Mary of Bradford-on-Avon Wiltshire spinster died 13 February 1931 Probate Winchester 26 February to Howard Ernest Moore law clerk. Effects £97 8s. 3d. ^[12]
