Biography

Thomas was born in 1863, the eighth child of Allen and Mary Laxton. He married Laura Henrietta Shuford on April 22, 1888 in Caldwell County. They were farmers with ten daughters and no sons. When asked why they had so many children, his granddaughter replied, "To work the farm." She said that they ALL worked on the farm - in this family, the girls didn't stay in the house and sew! Some or all of them, though, did "tatting" which is a form of lacemaking. Kate's granddaughter has her tatting supplies and examples of her work.

Thomas attended Kings Creek Baptist Church. He was very tall and thin and wore a huge mustache under his generous nose, as seen in the photo. According to his granddaughter, he had an apple tree on which he had grafted 12 varieties of apples so that they would have fresh fruit all season.

Thomas Jefferson Laxton died in 1952 and is buried at the Kings Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Lenoir, Caldwell County, NC.
