Horace Edward Lay was born on April 7, 1851, in East Hartford Township, Hartford, Connecticut. He is the son of Horace Lay and Charlotte Parker.

The 1870 U.S. Census for Connecticut records John Oldershaw as the 59 year old head of household. He was born in England, and his occupation is photographer. Also listed are Charlotte T. Oldershaw, female age 42; Lillian A. Oldershaw, female, age 2; Edward E. Lay, male age 19, clerk in a news office; Laura Parker, female, age 17; Katie E. A. Peckham, female, age 29, photographer; Elisa Applebey, female, age 18, secretary. Everyone but John is listed as born in Connecticut.

Edward married Estella Olive (surname unknown) about 1875 .
