Biography

Sarah E. Lay was born in 1826. According to an Allen family bible, Sarah was born on February 27th, 1826. Sarah E. Lay was married to Enos Allen on 23 Jan 1850 in Claiborne County, Tennessee. Both appear in the 1850 Census for Claiborne County, Tennessee. Sarah is listed as being born from "Unknown". The family relocates to Whitley County, Kentucky and are listed in the 1860 Census, where she is recorded as born in Tennessee. The Whitley County, Kentucky 1870 Census records her as being from North Carolina. The family relocates to Pulaski County, Kentucky and the 1880 Census records her as being from North Carolina and lists both parents also from North Carolina. She is listed over the years as Sarah and/or Sally Lay Sarah dies in 1890 in Laurel County, Kentucky. Again, an Allen family bible records her death as August 13th. This is also recorded in the Mountain Echo, a local newspaper in Laurel County, Kentucky. J. Gilbert reference Sarah Lay on page 90 of his publication and references her father as being Bartley Lay (Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky). Bartley does appear to have various records of a Sarah Lay, but I'm doubtful this is the correct Sarah. Bartley's Sarah is listed as being born around 1838/39. [1]
