Biography

Richard Daniel Lay is the son of James Berry Lay, Jr. and Mary Elizabeth Hall (1854-1921). He married Serina Mae "Pet" Strain (1886-1981) on 25 March 1906 in Gordon County, Georgia.

OBITUARY: "The Calhoun Times" Thursday, May 25, 1933 Volume 63, Number 21, page 1. R. D. Lay Dies Friday at Fairmount Home R. D. Lay, prominent business man of Fairmount, and one of Gordon county's best known and most highly respected citizens, died at his home in that city shortly after midnight last Friday morning, after an illness extending over more than a year. Mr. Lay was carried to the Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga several months ago and remained there for two months. Failing to imporove in health, he returneed to his home, where for the past six months his condition gradually grew worse. Mr. Lay, who was 47 years old, was a leader in civic affairs and was always interested in the welfare of his community, county and state. He had been engaged in the mercantile business at Fairmount for the past ten years. Mr. Lay is survived by his wife, who was formerly Miss Pet Strain; two sons, Baxter and Harry; his father, J. B. Lay; three brothers, C. W., J. G., and H. G. Lay of Calhoun, and two half-sisters, Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Benton, of Gordon county. Funeral services were held from the home at Fairmount at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. T. L. Henderson, pastor of the Fairmount Baptist church, assisted by the Rev. Davis, pastor of the Methodist church, and Rev. J. G. Kirckhoff, pastor of the Calhoun Presbyterian church. The pallbearers were members of the local ball team, which Mr. Lay had organized and managed, and were: Philip Tate, Tom McHan, Wyatt Hodges, Randolph Hodges, Bill Greer, Prudence Thompson, Raymond Richards and Sid Watts. After the funeral services the body was brought to Calhoun and interred in Fain cemetery. Ben Strain, funeral director, of Dalton, was in charge of arrangements. [1]
