Rhoda (Lay) Hamblin was a Latter Day Saint pioneer.

Biography

Rhoda Elizabeth Lay was born on September 27, 1842 in Monroe County, Mississippi. Her parents were William Harvey Lay and Sytha Solena Crosby. She was the oldest of eleven children.

Her family came to Utah in 1848 with the Willard Richards Company, settling in Cottonwood, Utah. They went with a company of 500 to settle in San Bernadino, California, later returning to Utah to settle in Santa Clara. In Santa Clara they grew cotton and wove cotton cloth for clothing.

She married Francis Marion Hamblin on October 21, 1861 in Santa Clara. They moved to Eagle Valley, Nevada in 1863, then moved to Kanab in 1871 where she lived for the rest of her life. They had eleven children.

  1. Arminda Hamblin was born on August 2, 1862 in Santa Clara.
  2. William Frederick Hamblin was born on March 27, 1865 in Santa Clara.
  3. Francis Marion Hamblin was born on June 6, 1866 in Eagle Valley.
  4. John Taylor Hamblinwas born on April 6, 1868 in Eagle Valley. He died on July 26, 1868.
  5. Tamer Pratt Hamblin was born 1869 in Eagle Valley.
  6. Sytha Solena Hamblin was born on February 10, 1870 in Eagle Valley.
  7. Mary Ann Hamblin was born on April 14, 1873 in Kanab.
  8. Rhoda Hamblin was born 1875 in Kanab.
  9. Rachel Tamar Hamblin was born on March 16, 1877 in Kanab.
  10. Isaiah Hamblin was born on April 1, 1879 in Kanab.
  11. Daphna Jane Hamblin was born on June 23, 1881 in Kanab.

In Kanab, they lived in Swallow Park ranch, raising cows and making butter and cheese.

Her husband died on July 30, 1881, shortly after their last child was born.

Rhoda Elizabeth passed away at an age of 92 on September 11, 1934 in Kanab. She is buried in the Kanab City Cemetery.

Ray-5006 and Lay-933 appear to represent the same person because: per sources provided, Lay is the correct spelling of her last name, there were not two wives. IF you have primary sources indicating Ray, please provide them
