Death of a Detective Officer - Detective Police Constable William Laycock, an old and well known member of the borough police force, died early yesterday morning at his home in Eden Street, Parliament Fields. His health had been failing for two or three years and about a month ago he had a severe attack of illness which necessitated his absence from duty for some time. On Wednesday while at work in the detective office he was taken ill with bronchitis and was removed to his home where he expired rather suddenly yesterday morning. Laycock had been 29 years in the police force and for 25 years had been in the detective department. During his long career as a detective, he rendered very valuable service to the force and the town and up to the last was considered a most useful officer. His death will be deeply regretted and by none more than by his brother officers by whom he was much liked.[10]
