William (Wagoner, his occupation) Laine [or Layne or Lane] was born by 1745, probably in Virginia Colony. His parents were William Laine and Susannah Porter.[1]
On January 1,1801, William sold to Middleton Lane one negro fellow by the name of George in exchange for 97 pounds, 8 shillings, and 5 pence, current money of Virginia, cash in hand. The deed was witnessed by William Stratton and John Stratton.[2]

According to tax records, he was living in Amherst county, Virginia, through 1807, but was taxed in Nelson county, Virginia in 1810.[1] Nelson County was formed from Amherst County in 1807.
It is not certain when he died, but presumably on or after 1810 when he stops appearing in the tax rolls. He is assumed provisionally to have died in 1810 in Nelson county, Virginia. (Some have suggested he died in Floyd county, Kentucky.)
