Biography

Abby Layton's birth date was recorded as 9 Jan 1840 in John Layton, Esq.'s family Bible, as a daughter of John Layton and his third wife, Sally Snover. [1] His children were all born in Sandyston Township, Sussex County, New Jersey. In about 1851 he and his youngest family moved to Litchfield Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. See John Layton's profile page.

Abby married Hanson S. Munn. They were married by 5 June 1857 since her father mentioned the couple in the will he signed on that date: his daughter Abbey L. Munn (sic), the wife of Hanson S. Munn, was bequeathed a farm in Litchfield Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, and also five hundred dollars. [2] ] The farm was probably a wedding gift, but putting it in the will would prevent her siblings from having any grounds to fuss. The 1860 Federal Census for census number 1131 in Litchfield Township shows them already in residence while Abby's father didn't die until 1865. [3]

The 1880 Federal Census for household #88, family # 92 in Litchfield Township shows that Abby's mother Sally M. Layton and Sally's mother Phoebe Snover were living with them, and also an unnamed 10-year-old Layton niece (probably Winnifred Layton). [4]

Abby's husband Hanson died in 1891. In the 1900 Bradford County Directory, "Munn, Abbie Mrs." was living in a house in South Waverly borough. [5] The 1910 Federal Census for South Waverly, dwelling # 250, family # 253 had 70-year-old Abby Munn working as a laundress and keeping a 70-year-old border, John Curran. [6]

In 1921 Abby's niece Lucy Layton Chubbuck reported that Abby was living at the "Soldiers and Widows Home" in Oxford, New York. [7] In 1927 Abby died there and was buried in the Home's Cemetery. [8]

Note

Although this profile was originally created from a GEDCOM (imported by Jackie Overland), much of it had to be deleted because it was incorrect. The GEDCOM had Hanson Munn's wife Abby Layton (1840-1927) (daughter of John Layton, Esq.) confounded with someone who was born in New Ark, New Jersey in about 1830 and died in Cook County, Illinois on 28 Dec 1883. Lucy Layton Chubbuck's letter to George Layton on 14 Dec 1921 establishes that their Aunt Abby was still alive and living at the Veteran's Home in Oxford, New York. Jackie Overland's WikiTree account is closed and she seems to be unavailable for comment. Other parts of the GEDCOM were made redundant by other sources. I will retain a copy of the GEDCOM material that formerly was in this profile, for a while. - Pauline Layton, 4 Jan 2020.
