Eugene served as a scout with the 121st infantry as part of the 8th Infantry Division. He enlisted 9 Oct 1941, Jacksonville Army Airfield, Florida. [9] Almost 3 years later, he landed in Normandy, France with his unit one month after D-day. "The first elements of the Regiment disembarked at 0130 on the 4th of July without a loss of an Officers or EM. Movement was immediately made to bivouac area in vicinity of Montebourg..." [10] Eugene was injured during the war probably somewhere south of La Haye-du-Puits (today La Haye), Manche, France and earned the Purple Heart for his service.
