Biography

Is John Le Grow the oldest son of Jean Le Gros? There is a head stone in the Old Blackhead cemetery that is for William Le Grow the only son of John and Mary Le Grow who drowned in the Pond in 1811 at age 21. William would have been born about 1789 or 1790. His father John would have had to be born 20 or more years earlier - 1769 or 1770. The 5 children of John Le Grow Sr are mentioned in the court case of Pippy and King vs Thomas Le Grow in 1796. There is no John named. But all were underage (21) at the time of their father's death in 1773. Their mother was left to manage until they came of age. Thomas, age 15 in 1773, was to have part of a room. His brother, Simon, age 6 in 1773, was to have his uncle's room. All five children were to share the "big room." Did John have older children? I suggest that there was an older son John. This would follow the naming practices of the time in which children were given the names of parents and grandparents followed by uncles and aunts. Today it might seem morbid but if a child with the father's name died young, the next son the name would often reused. John Le Gros Sr. would have followed this practice. Since John Jr. is not included with his underage siblings he might have been over 21. He could have inherited at his father's death and there would have been no claim on his property. If John was 21 at his father's death he would have been born about 1750. It is even possible given the age difference that John Jr was child of John Sr. first wife as Jean LeGros Sr. would have been having these 5 children in his 40 and 50s.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
