Biography

Birth

Sarah Stoler was born on Mar 15, 1877, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to David LeMay and Susan Gotwalt[1].

Mother’s death

Her parents were married in Ohio, near Dayton. But the couple is known to have moved to Fort Wayne before Sarah’s birth[2]. Her mother’s date of death is known and according to a newspaper clipping passed down through the family, the death occurred in Allen County. The cause of death and her burial site are unknown. The records for Bowers Cemetery have been lost, but Susan is likely interred there. Several of the LeMay family are there, and Sarah was also buried there[3]. Both Betty and James David Hartzell recall visiting the cemetery with Sarah[4].

Her father, David LeMay, remarried on Sept. 27, 1879 to Alice Kegg[5]. In 1880, 3 year-old Sarah is living with her father David LeMay, 26, and his new wife Alice A. Kegg, 20 years old. David is a laborer. He was born in Ohio. Sarah and Alice were both born in Indiana. David's father was born in Virginia, his mother in Ohio[6]. This marriage did not go well. According to newspaper articles, Alice physically abused both Sarah and her father, and David filed for divorce. Alice refuted the claims and stated she disciplined his child only as was necessary. David was forced to hide Sarah with relatives to protect her from Alice until he could obtain his divorce[7].

Later that year, her father married a third time on Dec 12, 1883[8]. By all accounts, this was a happier union, and Sarah soon had half-brothers and sisters that she loved and who remained a part of her life until her death year later[9].

In 1889, Sarah's grandfather, Susan Gotwald's father, Daniel Gotwalt died, and Sarah was one of his heirs, due to inherit her mother's share. Attorney John F. Rodabaugh and William Gaffney applied for guardianship over Sarah in this matter[10]. Her grandfather's property was sold at auction and Sarah was eventually awarded the sum of $1033[11].

In May 1895, Sarah and her stepmother Sarah and her half-brothers were in attendance at a circus parade, when one or more of the horses broke free and trampled them and killed her grandmother Catherine Garver LeMay. Catherine's skull was fractured by the horses hooves[12].

Marriages

Sarah married James “Jimmie” T. Robinson first on Sept 17, 1898 in Allen County. No live children were produced by this marriage[13]. Some family members had claimed to have seen evidence of a stillborn infant[14]. A year later, on Jul 20, 1899, Sarah was granted a divorce from Jimmie by Judge Hench on the grounds of alleged cruelty[15].

Sarah married Albert Stoler on Oct 8, 1902 in Fort Wayne, Indiana[16]. In 1910, Sarah 33 is living with Albert 29 and their daughters Virginia 6 and Ethel 2 years old at 1034 W. Jefferson St, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. All of them were born in Indiana. Sarah's mother was born in Pennsylvania. Albert's father was born in Pennsylvania and his mother in Ohio. They are renting their home. Albert is a general practice physician[17]. On Jun 1, 1913 Mildred Sylvia is born[18]. By this time, the family is living at 1205 Fulton Street, the house my grandmother, Ethel Stoler Hartzell, remembered the best from her childhood. I have a couple of ornaments from their tree at this house[19]. About this time, Albert began having an affair with Olive Grace Moses Reader while still married to Sarah. He had two daughters with Grace, Virginia Helen and Doris. The 1940 census showed Albert's relationship to each of the these children[20][21].

By 1920, Sarah is now 42, Albert 39, Virginia 16, Ethel 13 and Mildred 6 years old. The girls are attending school. Albert still practices medicine[22]. Sarah was now old enough that she was not likely to have any more children. Albert was living a double life and had two other daughters. He desired a son. He left Sarah for Olive Grace Moses. Olive's husband, Ephraim Reader initiates a lawsuit claiming Albert has stolen his wife's affections and also requests a divorce from his wife[23][24]. Sarah and Albert's divorce was final on May 23, 1923[25]. Virginia and Ethel had to leave high school to go to work to help support the family. Sarah took in boarders for awhile. It was a difficult time for women to make a living[26].

In 1930, Sarah, listed as Sadie, 53, is living with her daughter Viriginia, 26, and her son-in-law Blakley "Ray" Burns, 38 years old. Mildred, 16, is living with them also. The Burns have two children, Anna, 5, and William, 2. Lois Minnich, 8, from Virginia's first marriage is in the household, too. Sarah's occupation is sewer, and she works in a dress factory[27].

On Mar 6, 1931, Sarah married Simon J Donges[28]. He was born in 1875. According to families members, including her daughter, Donges was “no good and deserted her.” No one in the family heard from him again[29].

  2. Ethel Elvah Stoler (Hartzell) 4/20/1907-10/2/1994

Death

Sarah died on January 15,1934, in New Haven[30]. She was living in a home for indigent people. None of her daughters were in a position to take her in. Ethel did visit the home to help care for her there. She very much regretted not taking her in[31]. Her death certificate said she died from generalized carcinoma and debility with interstitial hepatitis contributing to her death[32]. As a child I was told by my grandmother Ethel that she had female cancer[33]. She was buried in Bowers Cemetery. Her husband is listed as Simon Donges[34].
