John Lea was born on 14 Apr 1805, and christened on 12 May 1805 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. He was the son of Anthony and Mary Lea. His father's occupation was recorded as painter, and the family's address as Prescot.

John married Margaret Ackers on 10 Feb 1834 in Wigan, Lancashire. Both were of the local parish; the witnesses were James Hayes and Saml Vizard.

Their daughter Ellen was christened on 23 Feb 1834 at the church of St Thomas the Martyr in Upholland, Lancashire. Her father's occupation was recorded as plasterer, and the family's address as Holland.

Their son James was christened on 1 Nov 1835 at the church of St Thomas the Martyr in Upholland, Lancashire. His father's occupation was recorded as painter, and the family's address as Holland.

Margaret died in 1855, and was buried on 24 Jan 1855 at St Thomas' Church in Eccleston, Lancashire. Her age was recorded as 53, and her address as Eccleston.[3]
