Leach-1266 and Leach-150 do not represent the same person because: One is now son of Richard; while the other, a son of John.

Unless there are objections, I plan to update his birth to "about 1645 (age at death). Also, his baptism to 19: 9 mo. : 1648 [19 November 1648], a child of "Sister Leach."

This profile seems to have largely followed author Fayette Phelps Leach (1926-1928), whose work badly mangled the family of Lawrence Leach and most all of Lawrence's children. That author duplicated many of the Salem Leach children baptism records, so that a child born to one or the other brother, John or Richard, was reported as born to both. See the explanation here.

Citing an apparent IGI record, narrative reads--John Leach was was baptized 3 July 1648, in Salem, Massachusetts Bay Colony, as "son to Richard."

There is no such Salem church baptismal record for John, son of Richard.

Richard's son John was probably born about 1645 (age at death), baptized Salem church on 19 : 9 mo. : 1648, with his sister, Sarah, the children of "Sister Leach."

John's sister Sarah is presumed the woman who married at Beverly, 7 February 1665, Joseph Herrick.

For the baptismal record, see Richard D. Pierce, The Records of the First Church in Salem, Massachusetts, 1629-1736 (Salem, Mass. : Essex Institute, 1974), 22 (Jon and Sarah, 1648); digital images, InternetArchive, "[1648] 19:9--Jon and Sarah, children of Sister Leach."

Edited to add: Have updated the profile of Sarah (Leach) Herrick (bef.1648-aft.1674).

I think it is possible that Mary Edwards was married to a different John Leach. The John Leach I have her married to has parents of John Leach (1622-1685 and Sarah Conant (1623-1659).

That is the Leach-1266 that I was referring too in the comment I made before your comment.

I was updating the Rice Edwards profile, who is the father of a Mary Edwards, and when building his children in the bio I too note that Mary couldn't have married this John Leach so I'm going to remove her as a marriage partner from this profile.

It appears there are a great many family tree's in Ancestry.com & FamilySearch.org who have linked Mary Edwards, dau. of Rice, to a John Leach of Salem because Torrey (p.457) records "John Leach m. in 1680/1690 Salem, Mary (?)Edwards." Torrey records the marriages of at least 4 additional John Leach's in Salem, Mass. and several in Boston all within a 20 year period and no agreement between their births/death dates which means they are prob. all different men. This profile is nicely supported by primary sources for his birth which agree to Torrey's marriage record of John Leach & Elizabeth Flint so he's ruled out.  :-)

I personally love the (?) abbreviation that Torrey uses to caution readers about a suspect surname. He does this in the case of one "John Leach marrying Mary (?) Edwards in 1680". Most 'casual' Torrey readers building their family tree's don't appear to be cautioned by the (?) abbreviation. Sincerely, Leigh Anne

There were several men, John Leach, early of Salem--
  • John^1 Leach Sr. (abt.1577-abt.1659), brother of Lawrence Leach. This John was married, but his wife never immigrated. He is called John Leach Sr. in the records, distinguishing him from Lawrence's son of the same name. This John Leach Sr left his estate of John Leach, the son of Richard Leach.
  • John^2 Leach (bef.1616-aft.1685), the son of Lawrence Leach. This John married Sarah Conant.
  • John^3 Leach (bef.1648-1702), son of son of John^2 Leach and Sarah Conant. WikiTree reports John^3 Leach (John^2, Lawrence^1) married Mary Edwards (1645-)
  • John^3 Leach (abt.1648-abt.1718), son of Richard^2 Leach and Sarah Fuller? WikiTree reports John^3 (Richard^2, Lawrence^1) married Elizabeth Flint (1650-1719). Richard's son is sometimes called John Leach Jr. in records. For example, see Essex County (Massachusetts) deeds, 6:45, John Smale to John Leach, Jr., son of Richard Leach, FamilySearch, dated 20 March 1681/2, recorded 20 March 1681/2.

The children of John^2 Leach and Richard^2 Leach have long been confused in print and in numerous family files. With perhaps one exception, the children's baptisms are found in the Salem church records. Those records were entered using mostly old style dates (which authors didn't always correctly convert), and most, but not all, identify the only parent as "Sister Le[a/e]ch."

I'm drilling down into various primary sources to better sort out the identities of the children born to John^2 and Richard^2 Leach. --Gene

Leach-1266 is shown as having married Mary Edwards and there is a problem with the one child shown as being hers. He was born in the middle of John's children with Elizabeth.

Leach-2672 and Leach-150 appear to represent the same person because: I think John was married to both women and he has the same parents.

Leach-1671 and Leach-1525 appear to represent the same person because: Same name spouse, and approx dob
I entered marriage data which aligns with daughter Elizabeth Leach, but I know better sources are needed.
