Biography

Judah Leaming was a Connecticuter.
Judah Leaming lived in Appalachia, in New York.

Judah Leaming was born on 4 Mar 1753, in Middletown, Hartford County, in the Connecticut Colony. He was the son of Matthias Leaming and Philathea Gould.[1]

At some point after the birth of Judah's sister, Philathea, in November of 1769, Matthias relocated his family to lands in Farmington Township, Hartford County, Connecticut Colony, probably in the area near the town of Southington, although the family was later associated with the Anglican church located in New Cambridge (later, Bristol).

He participated in the expedition that captured Fort Ticonderoga on 10 May 1775, and his name appeared afterwards among the regiment's Sick Bills.[2] He was discharged in the Northern District on 13 Aug 1775.[3]

Marriage and Family

On 4 Oct 1774, about six months before the Lexington Alarm and the beginning of open combat in Massachusetts, Judah married Thankful Tuttle, the daughter of Simon Tuttle and Hester Royce. They were probably married in Farmington Township, in Hartford County, Connecticut Colony,[4] possibly in New Cambridge (after 1785, Bristol). Their known children were all born in Connecticut: (Note: Probably a partial list.)

  1. Jeremiah Leaming (b. 30 Jan 1775, Connecticut)
  2. Eunice Leaming (b. 4 Oct 1775, Connecticut)
  3. Esther Leaming (b. 5 Dec 1776, Connecticut)
  4. Ruth Leaming (b. 23 Aug 1780, Connecticut)
  5. Judah Leaming (b. 14 Aug 1787, Connecticut)
  6. Philathea Leaming (b. ca. 20 Apr 1789, Connecticut)
  7. Daniel McIntosh "Daniel Mack" Leaming (b. 15 Jun 1794, Connecticut)
  8. Charity Leaming (b. ca. 16 Oct 1796, Connecticut)

Schoharie County, New York

During and after the war years, Judah and his young family continued to live in Hartford County, Connecticut. In 1790, he was living in Bristol (before 1785, the town of New Cambridge), in Farmington Township.[5] After about 1796, however, he moved his family to the newly forming town of Bristol in Schoharie County, New York, in the Appalachians. There, he established a farm, which was valued at $300 by 1800, while his personal property was valued at ony $50.[6] The 1800 census enumerated his household in Bristol as having three free white males under 10 years of age (which might not include his son, Judah, born in 1787), himself (a free white male aged 26 to 45, although Judah would have been closer to 47 at the time) and his wife, Thankful (a free white female, aged 26 to 45).[7]

In 1808, the town of Bristol changed its name to "Broome."[8] At the time of the 1810 census, Judah and Thankful had only one son, between the ages of 16 and 25, living with them in Broome, together with two daughters (one between the ages of 10 and 15, the second between 16 and 25).[9] By 1820, it would seem only the two daughters remained.[10]

Thankful (Tuttle) Leaming died at the age of 74, on 5 Jul 1826, in Broome, Schoharie County, New York.[11] Judah died in Broome about thee years later, at the age of 76, on 7 Jun 1829. Thankful and he were both buried in the East Conesville Cemetery, located in the town of Gilboa after about 1848.[12]
