Daniel Leatherman was born the son of Michael Leatherman and Catherine Palmer. They are buried on the family homestead "Buck's Hunt" with stones, in Washington County, Pennsylvania. They were German Lutheran Members. The first Leathermans to come to America were Hans DeWalt Leatherman who was among the family of six on the ship James Goodwill with David Crockett as master from Rotterdam on September 27, 1728. Daniel Leatherman was married to Rachel Swaim on November 24, 1836 in Allen County, Ohio. They were parents of John Henry Leatherman born November 19, 1839 Allen County, Ohio and is buried Troy Mills, Linn County, Iowa; Susanah Rachel Leatherman Walton born February 16, 1842 Allen County, Ohio buried Nodaway Cemetery, Nodaway, Iowa; Mary Magdalene Leatherman Largent born July 28, 1844 Allen County, Ohio buried Chaney, Oklahoma; Daniel Don Leatherman born September 7, 1847 buried Oakland Cemetery, Adams County, Iowa; Israel Leatherman July 5, 1853 Allen County, Ohio.

History of Leatherman Family pages 142-143: Daniel Leatherman was born on the Michael Leatherman homestead farm, "Buck's Hunt", in West Bethlehem Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, about 1794 and died in Linn County, Iowa in 1854. He was married in Allen County, Ohio on November 24, 1836 to Rachel Swaim. The marriage certificate reads as follows: "I do hereby certify that on the 24th day of November A.D. 1836, by virtue of a license from the Clerk of the Courts of Common Pleas of Allen County, Daniel Leatherman and Rachel Swaim were legally Joined in Marriage by me a Justice of the Peace in and for said County. Signed under my hand officially this 10th day of February, 1837. James Jameson, J.P. Daniel migrated from Washington County, Pennsylvania, to Allen County, Ohio, where he entered 160 acres of land in Auglaize Township in 1835, 80 acres of land in which he sold May 8, 1835 of which he sold on February 27, 1852, to Samuel I. Swaim. The remaining 80 acres was sold May 8, 1854, to Parker S. Baker. About this time he and his family moved to Linn County, Iowa.
