Biography

Catharine Leatherman was born Apr. 7, 1765 and died Sept. 22, 1844. She married on Nov. 28, 1784, as his second wife, George Custer of Chester County, Pennsylvania (born Dec 3, 1744, died Dec. 17, 1829).

Catharine is a 1st cousin, 6 times removed to me, Charles William Harvey. Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland. WikiTree-2679

Catharine was married to George Custer Only, see Memorial. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/93400987/catharine-custer

Catharine was raised near Hagerstown, Md., and later lived in Fayette Co., Pa.[1]

Residence

On 30 January, 1811, a quarter section of land in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, was granted to George Custer for serving in the Revolutionary War, based on a military compensation law passed by Congress a few years earlier. George Custer and wife Catharine deeded this same land to their son Jonathan and wife Rachel on Dec. 9, 1819.[1]

Children

Records in possession of descendants show that George and Catharine Custer had 11 children (though the names of only 9 are known): Daniel, Susannah, Catherine, Magdalena, Joseph, Jonathan, Mary, Elizabeth, Lydia, and 2 others who probably died in infancy.[1]

Marriage

George Custer, the second son [of Paul and Sarah Martha Ball Custer], m 1st Mar. 29, 1774, Susannah Long who d when their children were all small. They were John, George, Sarah, David, Jacob, Hannah. When John, the oldest, was not quite 10 years old and Hannah, the youngest, only about 3-1/2 months old, George Custer m his second wife, Catharine Leatherman.[1]
Catharine Leatherman, b Apr 7-1765 d Sep 22-1844
m Nov 28, 1784 George Custer, son of Paul - 1744-1829 Tuscarawas Co, Ohio[2]
NOTE: Tuscarawas County was not created until 1808, and in fact, none of the Northwest Territory was open for white settlement until 1785. George Custer did not own any land in Tuscarawas County until 1811 (see above biography discussing the military grant of land in Tuscarawas County, Ohio to George Custer in 1811). So the place of marriage noted in this source is not credible.

Leatherman-383 and Leatherman-40 appear to represent the same person because: I recently uploaded a GEDCOM and for it either didn't catch this entry or I missed it, but I added this Catherine Leatherman (Leatherman-383) who is the wife of George Custer (second wife, as first wife was Susannah Long). Not sure how I missed it but please accept this merge.

A Sons of the American Revolution Application lists Catherine Leatherman as the wife of George Custer (listing was a descendant of their daughter Susannah Custer, m. Daniel Moser).

Let me know if you have any questions.
