"Peter Leavitt and his wife, Sarah Spaulding Leavitt, were among the first settlers, locating on the Ammonoosuc near the southwest corner of the town around 1816. Their house was located in the field above the former Bob Mullins house, near what is now called "Pete Leavitt's Ledge." Their son George was born in 1824. He was one of the selectmen of Dummer. He and his wife Caroline Forbush, daughter of Daniel and Nancy Grapes Forbush, had six children: Orlando, Sarah Ella, Ella Clara, George, Mary Frances and Jerome. In 1863 they joined with others and went west to live." page 81
