Biography

Marie Rose LeBlanc was the daughter of Joseph LeBlanc and Marguerite LeBlanc. She was born on 1 February 1788 and baptized 22 March 1788 at St. Gabriel Church in St. Gabriel, Iberville Parish, Louisiana, New Spain.[1]

She married Jean Danos, son of Jean Danos and Marguerite Laurent, on 10 September 1808 in St. Gabriel.[2][3][4] They had nine known children:[5]

  1. Marie Eleonore Danos, b. 27 Apr 1809
  2. Marie Jean Danos, b. 2 Oct 1810
  3. Marie Heloise Danos, b. 4 Mar 1812, d. about 26 Sep 1812
  4. Marie Euphemie Danos, b. 19 Apr 1814
  5. Marie Virginie Danos, b. 10 Aug 1815
  6. Marie Angeline Danos, b. 19 Oct 1817
  7. Jean Napoleon Danos, b. 4 May 1819
  8. Jean Absolom Danos, b. 1 Jan 1821
  9. Timoleon Danos, b. 10 Jan 1823 [?]

The family was counted in the U.S. censuses of Iberville Parish in 1810 and 1820. Their home was on the "right bank" [West bank] of the Mississippi River.[6][7]

Marie Rose was widowed in 1827.[8] She was listed as the head of the family on the 1830 and 1840 censuses, with her children. By 1840, she owned three slaves.[9][10] She was enumerated on the 1850 census, with probably one of her sons living with her, and three slaves.[11][12]

She died on 10 January 1860 in Iberville Parish. The succession of her estate was opened a few days later, on the 14th, and an inventory was ordered to be taken. The surviving heirs listed were her children: Absolom, Eleonore, Virginie; and the children of her son Napoleon.[13]

Slaves

The 1840 census counted 3 slaves described as follows:[10]
  • 1 black female, age 24-35 years
  • 1 black male, age 10-23 years
  • 1 black male, age under 10 years
The 1850 census listed this information on 3 slaves:[12]
  • 1 black male, age 42
  • 1 black female, age 25 (see Rachel below)
  • 1 black male, age 18
Her son Napoleon also appears to have owned slaves. He is not listed by name on the 1850 population census, but is probably the unnamed Danos living in Marie Rose's household. The slave schedule puts him next after the Widow Danos, and lists these slaves:
  • 1 black female, age 25
  • 1 black male, age 5
  • 1 black female, age 2
According to Marie Rose's succession dated 14 January 1860, she owned one slave:
  • Rachel, female, age 34 years (could this be the black female age 25 found on the 1850 census?)

Notes: Children were "forced" into the above age brackets, but several are miscategorized. It's possible that some had died and other unidentified children were counted instead, but this is the best guess of family member identities.
