Biography

ANGIETJE (Agnes) CONSTANCE LeBRUN (aka Le Brun and Le Baun) was daughter of Moise LeBrun and unknown wife. [1] She was a French Huguenot.

Her naturalization record indicates that she was born on the Island of Guadeloupe in the West Indies, probably about 1670.

She migrated to New York by 1687. Baird said that she resided in New Rochelle for some time after arriving in New York, probably with Daniel Gombaud of New Rochelle and his wife, who may have been her guardians. According to Baird, Agnes Constance Le Brun, "born at Guadaloupe," was naturalized in New York in 1687, together with Daniel Gombaud and his wife.[2][3]

She was received as a member of the Dutch Church of New York, September 14, 1691, by certificate from the French Church in New Rochelle. The record states "den 4 Sept. Agnes Constance le Brun, j.d. met attest. van N. Rochelle."[4]

Agnes Constance Le Brun married on 25 August 1695 in New York, as the second wife of Gabriel Laberteaux (aka Le Boiteaux/Laboyteaux, etc.) widower of Marquaize / Marquize Fleuriau. [5]

Their first three children, Suzanne, Jeanne and Paul, were baptized at the French Church in New York. [6]

During this time the family lived in the dock ward of New York where the Gabriel "Laboyteaux" estate was valued between 141 and 151 [British] pounds between 1696 and 1699. (NYHS 43:85; 44:308). Gabriel's house in New York must have been located on Broad Street since a committee reported to the New York Common Council that a proposed sewer line in Broad Street from the corner of "Mr. Le Boyteaux" to Mrs. Van Vecq's was 1158 feet in length. (NYC Com. Council 1:407)

On 22 December 1728, she was named as "Agnietje Bettieu," a witness at the baptism of Gabriel Laboyteaux, son of Peter Laboyteaux and Jemima Bries (NJHS 11:211).

On July 24, 1752 Paul Leboiteux was named executor in the Will of Roelof Sebring (1675-1756) of Somerset County. Roelof Janse Sebring's second wife was the widow, "Angenitje Leboiteaux". (Sebring:157) She is referred to in Roelof Sebring's will as a widow with a grown son and no children from Roelof Sebring, and living at the plantation on Raritan River. (Sebring:157; NJ Will Index)

Based on Gabriel's taxes, he was considered one of the richest Huguenots of the city of New York in the 1690s. (Butler: 157)

The Isle of Guadeloupe

Christopher Columbus was the first European to set foot in Guadeloupe. He was on his second trip to the Americas, and set foot on the island, seeking fresh water. Columbus christened the island Santa Maria de Guadalupe de Extremadura, named after the Virgin Mary of Guadalupe.

It was the French however, who were the first European settlers in the island. In the year 1635, the French landed in the island of Basse-Terre and claimed Guadeloupe for France. They drove the native Caribs off the island, established agriculture in the islands and soon, Guadeloupe had its first sugar mill. The island was officially annexed by France in 1674.

Britain made several attempts in invading Guadeloupe. They were able to develop Pointe-à-Pitre into a major harbor, which opened the island to trading with North America and Europe. It was also due to this that Guadeloupean businesses were able to import cheap raw materials and food from America. Guadeloupe reverted back to French rule in 1753 upon the signing of the Treaty of Paris. Guadeloupe is one of France’s 26 regions (as an overseas region). Guadeloupe’s currency is the euro, since it’s considered as part of the European Union. However, Guadeloupe is not part of the Schengen Agreement.

Le_brun-1 and LeBrun-74 appear to be the same person. They likely need to be merged.

It looks like these two people, set as unmerged matches and both married to Roelof Sibering, are actually the same person, but Leboiteaux (sp) is her married name.

"In his will, written on 24 July 1752 and proved on 26 March 1756. Roelof was of Somerset County, NJ. He names his then wife -- Angenitje -- and her son, Paul Leboiteaux. Roelof's own children were named as John, Cornelius, Volkert, Dirck, and Annetje, wife of Harpert Peterson. Roelof named as executors his sons Volkert and Cornelius and his step-son Paul Leboiteaux."
