PARENTAGE
Parents: unknown
Martha Ann Ledbetter's 1880 census says both her parents born in VA.
Martha appears to be duplicated on 1850 census. Once with Lucinda (assumed sister), and another with Thomas (assumed brother).
Lucinda Catherine Ledbetter-Robison (assumed sister), b. abt 1832 TN.
Lucinda did not live to 1880, so her parents birthplace is unknown.
Thomas C Ledbetter (assumed brother), b. abt 1820 in either TN or AL.
Thomas' 1880 census says both parents were born in Scotland.
Thomas has a brother, James J Ledbetter, confirmed by 1880 census.
James J Ledbetter (brother of Thomas), b. 1829 in either TN or AL.
James' 1880 census says both parents were born in Scotland.
A hypothesis by family researchers, Dick Ledbetter and Ken Haughton, suggests parents are William Henry Ledbetter (b. abt 1803), and Mary Shockley.
Their research with DNA analysis shows this group of Ledbetters in DNA halotype R1b. The DNA halotypes R1b and I1a, separates all US Ledbetters into 2 broad categories
Other family researchers, suggest a possible THORN connection, based on the
1850 census of James J Ledbetter, living with the THORN family.
Even though James living with THORN family in 1850, he was NOT a minor.
James was one of 3 young men with the THORN family; clerk, grocer, farmer.
OTHER SIBLINGS
The persons in this section are POTENTIAL siblings - NOT PROVEN.
There does not appear to be any solid connections to any of the below Ledbetters, other than they were all living the same general area in 1850.
Williams Jehu Ledbetter, b. 1825 in either TN or AL
Williams' 1880 & 1900 census show his father born VA, and mother born SC
Williams' has 15-yr-old Malissa (assumed sister) living with his family in 1850.
Malissa Ledbetter-Wright (sister of Williams), b. 1836 in either AL to TN
Malissa's 1900 census shows father born VA, mother born NC.
Malissa's 1910 census shows father born TN, mother born TN.
Mary Ledbetter-Rice, b. about 1826, in either AL or TN.
Mary was living in 1850 Itawamba Co. MS, as was assumed sister Lucinda.
Mary's 1880 census, says both parents were born in TN.
Shelman is the only Ledbetter in the area who is NOT considered a sibling.
Shelman P Ledbetter, b. abt 1818 AL, living in 1850 Franklin Co. AL
His 1840 census in Madison Co. AL, suggests Shelman is son of Joel Ledbetter.
Shelman's 1880 census says both parents were born in GA.
