Please be careful with merges, there are 2 Henry Ledbetters that were born about the same time. This Henry lived his life in Virginia married to Mary House, and the other Henry Leadbetter lived in Massachusetts married to Sarah Tolman.

Biography

Henry Ledbetter, the first ancestor we know with certainty, was born in England c1625. His father brought him to Charles City Co. VA. on Appomattox River c1635 when he was about 10 years old. The area he lived in later became Prince George Co. VA. The first confirmed record we have of him is 1659 when he had to pay a debt of 816 pounds of tobacco to a John Cogan. There is a Cogan's or Coggins Point today nearby on the James River. In Apr. 1668 Henry Leadbeater had 224 ac. on south side Appomattox River, "..where he now lives", adj. Robt. Coleman, and 125 ac. which was part of Edw. Tunstall's patent "...to sd. Leadbeater's father"(not named) in 1638, plus 99 ac. for transporting a Margery Lucas and a Mary House to Virginia. Therefore Henry Ledbetter's small plantation of 448 ac. is swallowed up inside what is today Hopewell, VA. In Oct. 1673 a judgment was awarded to Mary Ledbeter against a Thomas Walton for 1000 pounds of tobacco "..for accomodacon, cloathing and levyes expended for deft." Some think this Mary Ledbetter is Henry's mother. However, it seems unlikely that his mother would be involved in litigation at age about 70. I think this Mary Ledbetter is more likely Henry Ledbetter's wife. The children of Henry Ledbetter and wife (exact order of birth unknown)were, 1) Francis Ledbetter(son), born c1650, 2) Dau. Ledbetter, born c1652, md. William Jones, 3) Henry Ledbetter, born c1654, 4) William Ledbetter, born c1656, 5) Richard Ledbetter, born c1658, 6) John Ledbetter, born c1664, 7) Drury Ledbetter, born c1667, 8) Martha Ledbetter, born c1668. These birth years are only estimates and there were almost certainly a few more children, perhaps up to 4 more, who died young. Couples normally had up to 12 children in those days. The above written by Dennis Stewart(16676).

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Henry by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Henry:

I actually have compelling evidence that Henry Ledbetter's wife was a Mary Drury, not Mary House. This also explains why the name Drury was passed down in the Ledbetter family.

Ola, 16676 here. The best and most comprehensive source for these Ledbetters is the volume "Ledbetters Revisited", by Haughton & Huddleston. 1625 is a good estimate for Henry Ledbetter's birth. However, I've seen no evidence he was born Jan. 30, 1625. Even more astounding there is no real evidence his wife was Mary House. She and a Margery Lucas were headrights of Henry Leadbeater in "Cavaliers And Pioneers", vol. II. Nothing here to imply they were married. Yet the profile asserts "Mary House eventually became the first wife of Henry Ledbetter." Then it goes on his second wife was a Sarah Tomlin...based on ? I think his wife should be left as unknown. Much of this data comes from a Find-A-Grave bio. But, I would like to do some edits on this profile and add some sourced information.

update - hearing no objection, I added Ledbetter-1210

Hi! I ran across Elizabeth Ledbetter who married William Jones of Surry County, Virginia & the source on her profile - https://wc.rootsweb.com/trees/209844/I89547/-/individual - says her parents are Henry & Mary (House) Ledbetter, with the note: See Roy Ledbetter's book, p.2 Some genealogies show her as Elizabeth Shelton, but I can find no evidence to support this.

OK if I attach her as their daughter? https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Ledbetter-1210

Ledbetter-924 and Ledbetter-209 appear to represent the same person because: while birth and death are different, wife is the same and parents are the same. -924 does not have sources
