Biography

Rudolph was born in 1891. He learned the florist business from his father, and after serving in the U.S. Army in England during World War I, became an active partner in the business. After retiring, he came to live with us, passed away in Holy Cross Cemetery on Memorial Day weekend, laying wreaths on veterans' graves.

Grandpa was a great story-teller. He had two trophies, one from the Knights of Columbus, and the other I don't remember, "World's Greatest Liar." One of his stories precipitated my interest in genealogy. He said John Hilliker, my 5th great-grandfather, spied for the British during the American Revolution; he was at the Old Block House at one point; he spoke several Indian tongues, and he jumped over Split Rock (across Lake Champlain, in New York) while being chased by angry Mohawk Indians. My mother always told us never to believe anything Grandpa told us. It turns out, I was able to document everything that Grandpa said, except for the Split Rock incident.
