Richard married between July and August of 1537 to Margaret, daughter of Sir Richard Grenville I of Stowe in Kilkhampton, Cornwall.[1][3] Margaret's father opposed the match because of Richard's "modest birth and limited means."[3]
Richard was a friend of Thomas Cromwell.[3] Richard's father had been Henry VII's yeoman of the jewel house, and in 1532 Cromwell attained the post of master of the jewel house.[3] Perhaps this is the connection whereby Richard became acquainted with Cromwell.[3]
On 8 August 1536, Richard was appointed to the important post of surveyorship of Calais.[3]
