Biography

Notables Project
Mary Lee is Notable.

Mary Custis was born at Arlington, Virginia in 1835. Her parents were Robert Edward Lee and Mary Ann Randolph Custis. Her father was a West Point graduate an officer in the Army Corps of Engineers. He was away on his duties when Mary was born. Robert was away when their second child, a girl named Mary Custis Lee, was born on July 12, 1835. [1]

Mary's father was in Washington D.C in 1836 and was promoted. He then traveled to St. Louis in the summer of 1837 to superintend works protecting the harbor of the city from shifts in the channel of the Mississippi. Except for occasional visits to Virginia, Lee remained at St. Louis until October 1840. War with Mexico came in 1846 and Mary's father left for Texas and then Mexico. Mary was among one of 7 children at home while her father was away. Her father did not return home until the summer of 1848.

War came again in April of 1861. Mary's father resigned from the U.S. Army and became commander of Virginia forces after Virginia seceded from the Union. Her father was made Brigadier General in the Confederate Army. Her three brothers also entered the service of the Confederacy. Mary had to leave Arlington with her mother and other siblings before Union troops came across the Potomac to Arlington. By 23 May her home was occupied and over run with Union soldiers. Mary moved around with her mother and siblings to different locations then moved to Richmond where they stayed until the war ended.

After the war her father returned to Richmond to be with his family. He was offered a position as president of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia. He accepted the position and moved his family there. Mary moved with her parents to Lexington. Mary was never married. She died in 1918 at Hot Springs, Bath County, Virginia.
