Biography

Charles Stephens Lee was born January 9, 1778 [1] in Mississippi or Virginia. No source is given for either. A more likely possibility is North Carolina, which is the claim, also unsourced, at his profile on Family Search. Note that Family Search has a Thomas Lee of N. Carolina as his father and Elizabeth Stephens as his mother, both of whom died in Georgia -- and that his two children with Ann Cogan buried near them at Lee Cemetery are named Thomas Charles Lee and Elizabeth Stephens Lee.
In 1810 Charles was 32 years old and living in Concordia, one of the original Louisiana parishes, which bordered the Natchez District of Mississippi. His household included another male in his age group (26-45, possibly his brother or hired hand), one male child (age 0-10), and a female (age 16-26, possibly Elizabeth Bass, whom he later married. Job Bass is two doors up, with daughters in Elizabeth's age group). [2]
Charles S. Lee joined the Louisiana Militia during the War of 1812. [3]
He married Elizabeth Bass on April 2, 1818 in Jefferson, Mississippi. [4]
In 1820 Charles and Elizabeth lived beside her father and a brother or uncle in Concordia, Louisiana. [5]
Elizabeth died c.1825.
Ann Cogan was his second wife. Their marriage ended at the death of Charles.
Charles and Ann lived in Claiborne County, Mississippi in 1830, with 4 young daughters. [6]
Charles Stephens Lee died on November 21, 1836 and is buried at Lee Cemetery, Alcorn, Claiborne County, Mississippi, USA. [7] Another source says he is buried at Griffin Cemetery (-31.841944, -91.143056), as is a younger Job Bass. [8] Note that the Lee Cemetery page linked above has photos of grave markers for Charles; his second wife, Ann; for two of their children who died young; for a child of his with his wife Elizabeth; and for the same Job Bass listed at the Griffin Cemetery with Charles Stephens Lee.
