Biography

John Lee II was born about 1797 in Johnston County, North Carolina (NC). [1] He was the son of John Lee I and Morning (Altman) Lee. He married Dorothy (Smith) Lee on 22 May 1826 in Johnston County, NC. [2] [3] [4]

In 1850, John, 53, and Dorothy, 52, are farming in District 15 in Johnston County, NC. Their real estate is worth $3,300. They have 6 children living at home: Mordecai, 20, John, 17, Julius, 14, Marceline, 12, Lucinda, 9, and Walter, 5. [5] In 1860, John, 60, and Dorothea, 50, are still farming in Johnston County (NC), although now in the Neuse River District. Their real estate has declined in value to $2,500. Their personal estate is valued at $14,610. Their 6 children are still living at home. [6] By 1870, John, 70, and Dorothy, 60, are farming by themselves in Meadow in Johnston County (NC). There is no value given for either their real estate or personal estate. Their sons, Walter and Claudius (John Claude), are living near them. [7]

John passed away on 4 Jan 1872 in Johnston County (NC). He is buried in the John Lee, Sr Cemetery located in Meadow in Johnston County, NC. There is a headstone, but it was placed years after his death. It is unclear whether it was a replacement for stones that were broken or becoming illegible. [8]

John died intestate and in debt. J C Lee as administrator of John's estate had sold John's personal possessions and after deducting the administrative costs, funeral expenses and deficiency in the widow's year's support, he netted $624.44. On 20 Mar 1874, the probate court handed down its final judgement regarding the money owed by the estate to Thomas H Atkinson, guardian of of the heirs of Elizah Atkinson, and to those persons holding notes signed by John. The court ruled that there was enough money to pay Thomas H Atkinson the $269.59 owed to him from two judgements that were ruled in his favor. The court ruled that there were insufficient funds to pay John's debts which totaled $1,982.88. The note holders each agreed to take 17.9% of the money owed to them, reducing the amount of John's debt to $354.85. [9]
