Biography

Charles Lee lived in England, probably around Tavistock, Devon.

He married Rebecca Southcombe and they had several children including Charles Lee (1826-1872) and William Lee (bef.1860-aft.1872). The younger Charles married in 1852 and migrated to South Australia in 1855. He settled at Dairy Flat near Yankalilla.

Some time, this Charles also migrated to South Australia, possibly after his first wife had died.

Charles remarried to widow Mary Ann Mitchell (nee Viney) on 25 July 1866.[1]

Charles died at Dairy Flat near Yankalilla on 21 March 1883, aged 80.[2] His Next of Kin were recorded as Mary, Eleanor, Wm, Eliz + grchn. [3]

His wife Mary Ann died in April 1883.

THE Friends of Mr. G. Viney are respectfully informed that the REMAINS of his late SISTER, Mary Ann Lee, will be Removed from his Residence, near Forest Inn, South-road, This Afternoon, at 4 o'clock, for Interment in West terrace Cemetery.[5]

Research notes

I have not found a clear indication that the Charles Lee described here is the Charles Lee who was the father of Rev Charles Lee (1826-1872) but nothing to separate them either. Strongest hints that they are related are:

  1. land bought in 1864 by Charles Lee Junior[6]
  2. Caroline Rebecca Lee (1870-1956) is buried in the same plot as this person (who would be her grandfather) at West Terrace Cemetery.

I have not determined when this Charles migrated to SA, so don't know if he preceded or followed his son Charles.
