William was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina in 1843. He served in the Confederate Army with Co. E, 36th Georgia Infantry Regiment during the Civil War and was wounded in action. He was promoted to first corporal in May of 1863 and captured at the fall of Vicksburg. Later, he managed to rejoin his unit and fought until the end of the war, surrendering in Greensboro, NC with Joseph E. Johnston’s Army of the Tennessee on April 26, 1865. After the war, the Reverend William E. Lee was the Moderator of the Pleasant Valley Baptist Association of Churches from 1899-1914. He passed away in 1921 at the age of 77.
