Roger was born in 1529. He was the son of Geoffrey Lee and Agnes Conyers. Married first Muriel Gower of Stainsby according to Dugdale. Aveling describes him at '1569 ... one of the most violent papists in the country', but states he later conformed. Muriel's fate is unclear; it is likely Roger's second wife is Isabella Tankard/ Tancred as noted below. This second marriage would appear to be after 1583. Aveling reports that Dr. Lee and his second wife Isabella had two daughters, who "turned out badly." One of these appears to be Elizabeth, who married Robert Ellis in 1610. Definitive connections to other established pedigrees are vexingly evasive with this family.
HoP Geoffrey Lee says Roger was 47 in 1576.
Pedigree of Gower of Stainsby in History of Cleveland by John Graves, p.478 - does not show Muriel.
Yorkshire Deeds vol.1 ed. Brown, p.138 describes William as son of Roger Lee.
