Biography

Birth
Thomas Lee, son of Richard and Sarah, was born 20 February 1671, Ipswich, Essex county, Massachusetts. [1] [2]

Of all his siblings only Thomas' surname in his birth name is recorded using the Leigh spelling but the truncated spelling of Lee appears to have been used there-after. Author William Lee records that "Richard Lee's children wrote their names Lee". [2]

Marriage and Children
He married before 1698 Anna/Hannah (Unknown). Their children were born in Chebacco (Ipswich). [3] [2] By 1704 they removed to Boston.[2] Thomas and Anna Lee had the following children:

  • Jonathan Lee, b. 4 Jun 1698, Chebacco son of Thomas & Hannah [4]
  • Thomas Lee, Jr., b. 4 Oct 1700, Chebacco, son of Thomas & Hannah [4] ; See Research Notes
  • Lucy Lee, b. 12 Jul 1703, Chebacco, dau. of Thomas & Hannah [4]

At this time there is no death date for Thomas' wife Anna/Hanna (Unknown) Lee. Additionally, based upon research of any and all contemporary Thomas Lee's in the Boston area another marriage record has been located which, at face value, appears to belong to this Thomas Lee:

"The Honorable [notable] Samuel Sewall, Esq. married Hannah Farley and Thomas Lee on 3 February 1715(OS), Boston, Massachusetts." [5] Hannah Farley (1671-aft1716) daughter of Caleb and Lydia, was twice the average age for a woman's first marriage, an event not improbable and which in this case is supported by her father's probated Will where in 1713 he bequeaths to daughter "Hannah Farley" land and other considerations.[6] Her father's Will also mentions that upon Hannah's death her bequeathment reverts to several of her brothers which may imply she was not capable of bearing children. [6]

Proving that the Hannah Farley, born 18 October 1671, a birth date which makes her a contemporary of Thomas Lee (this profile) of Ipswich/Chebacco and later Boston, is the additional court record for her father's probated estate:

4 Sep 1716 George Farley, son of widow Lydia Farley of Newton petitioned for administration of his mother's estate. The court granted administration to daughter Hannah Lee on 10 September with her husband Thomas Lee posting bond.[7] The sons Ebenezer, Timothy, Joseph, Benjamin and George Farley acknowledged agreement with the estate distribution which included:
"all moveables to Hannah Lee, except furniture that had been designated to grand daughter Lydia Shed, and L4 promised to son Benjamin Farley" [7]

Land Transactions and other Miscellany
28 Oct 1696 He purchased of his parents, for L37, a lot of salt marsh in Hog Island. [2]

Oct 19 1699 Thomas Lee son of Richard, of Chebacco, bond of obligation in L50 on part of Thomas Knowlton and that Richard & Sarah Lee parents of s'd Thomas shall have liberty to cut & carry wood & timber. [Ipswich deeds, Vol. 14: p.169.] [2]

19 Oct 1699 Thomas Lee of Chebacco & wife Anna to Thos. Knowlton 3rd, do., cordwainer, 30 acres upland & meadow. [Ipswich deeds, Vol. 14: p.182] [2]

22 Jun 1704 Thomas Lee of Boston formerly of Ipswich, yeoman, and Abiel Marshall, Ipswich, sadler, to Rev. john Wise, a small dwelling house & 4 acres in Ipswich. [Ipswich deeds, Vol. 16: p.209] [2]

5 Jan 1704 "We Thomas and Richard Lee, Jr. and Nath'l Geddings, in right of Sarah his wife, and Sarah the wife of s'd Nath'l Geddings, in her own right, and Mary Lee, spinster, all of Ipswich, all children and heirs of Richard Lee, carpenter, for L388, to Rev. John Wise, of Ipswich, between 70 & 80 acres, with 2 dwelling houses, 2 barnes & 1 shop on s'd lands. [Ipswich deeds, Vol. 15: p.216] [2]

Death
His death record has not been located at this time. Author/compiler William Lee notes that there are references to several Thomas Lee's in Boston presumably referring to Thomas Lee and / or his son Thomas, Jr.
