(From the Western Post, Oct. 17.)
DEATH BY DROWNING.— An inquest was held on Thursday, before Dr. King, touching the death of Charles Thomas Lee, lying dead at Froom's Creek.
James Hayes said on Tuesday last he was driving deceased in a cart ; upon reaching the river Lee requested to be allowed to drive, as he was acquainted with the crossing-place ; he took the reins and drove into the river ; he (witness) told deceased to keep the horses' heads up the stream ; he had hardly given the caution when the outrigger horse got lose from one of the traces, and the off wheel of the cart going into a hole, was upset, and both thrown into the water; he (witness) was carried some distance down the stream, until stopped by a tree ; upon looking round he saw deceased going down the stream, apparently swimming. He did not consider Lee was intoxicated.
Trooper O'Brien deposed to finding the body in the roots of a tree in the river.
The jury returned a verdict " accidental drowning," to which they added that the attention of the Government be drawn to the necessity of providing some means of crossing the river to Slasher's Flats during the floods, as accidents are frequent at such times there. [8]
