Military Service, Civil War
There are a number of what appear to be inconsistencies in Timothy's military service files. Between his military service file on Fold3 and the five different records for him on the Alabama Civil War Soldiers database, there are four different enlistment dates and three enlistment locations. To help sort this out, his own account was used; the information below was reported by him on the 1907 Alabama Census of Confederate Veterans. He enlisted, was discharged for medical reasons, reenlisted in another (Florida) regiment, and then transferred back to his original regiment. Finally, he was discharged again for medical reasons. [2]
Enlistment date: August 7, 1861
Enlistment Location: Richmond, Virginia
Rank: Private
Regiment: Company H, 15th Alabama Infantry
Discharged: December 5, 1863 (should be 1862)
Reenlisted: November 13, 1863
Location: Newton, Alabama
Rank: Private
Regiment: Company C, 11th Florida Infantry
Continued: About 10 months, then transferred back to Company H, 15th Alabama Infantry.
Timothy's medical discharge came after a shell exploded near him and rendered him deaf, at the Battle of Gaines Mill on June 27, 1862 (this was called by some the "First Battle of Cold Harbor." The military surgeons declared him to be permanently deaf and he was given a medical discharge in December 1862. Apparently, he recovered his hearing enough to be able to reenlist in August 1863. He was discharged again in March 1865, again for deafness. [3][4][5][6][7][8]
