Biography

Greenberry Lee and his bother Eli (also spelled Ely or Eley) were on a wagon train to Mississippi around 1819 with family members from Georgia and South Carolina when one of the two fell ill near what was shortly to become Montgomery. Both brothers decided to stay there, while others in the family travelled on to Mississippi. They settled near what is today Hattiesburg.

In 1850, he is shown in Covington, Alabama with his wife, Martha and 6 children:[1]

  1. Andrew Lee 18 Alabama
  2. William Lee 14 Alabama
  3. Martha Lee 11 Alabama
  4. Lucinda Lee 9 Alabama
  5. George Lee 6 Alabama
  6. Caroline Gipson 6

There is a child Caroline Gipson, age 6 shown. The "story" goes like this:

Three Gipson brothers, accompanied by their young sister Margaret, left South Carolina or Georgia in the mid-1830s, intending to "fight for Texas". They ran out of money in Butler County, Alabama, where they left their sister, Margaret, with Greenberry Lee -- perhaps sold her to him in return for money to continue their journey. Lee set Margaret up in a "side house" on his property, and she had three children by him, Caroline being one of them. Lee's wife eventually arranged a marriage between Margaret and a local widower, Timothy Tynes, who already had several children with his first wife. Some of this story comes from a manuscript written by Reuben Dewey Gibson (1902-1989), great-grandson of Margaret Gipson (whom he calls Amanda). [2]

Greenberry and Margaret were not married. Margaret Gipson was an indentured servant and mother of three of his children.

Lee-38888 and Lee-4866 appear to represent the same person because: Greenberry Lee had children with a woman named Margaret Gipson who was not his wife. I am a descendant of his wife Martha Jane Taylor. Margaret was an indentured servant.
