ROBERT EDWARD LEE. Giles county is proud to number among her native sonsRobert Edward Lee, a prominent member of the Tennessee bar, practicing inPulaski. His birth occurred on the 31st of March, 1891, a son of RobertEdward and Janie (Dunlap) Lee. The paternal grandparents were EdwardGreenberry B. and Lucy (Farra) Lee, natives of Tennessee. EdwardGreenberry B. Lee was a captain in the United States army during the warwith Mexico, serving under General Scott. The maternal grandparents wereThomas F. and Sammie (Smith) Dunlap, likewise natives of this state.Robert Edward Lee, Sr., was born December 7, 1866, and died April 18,1891. His widow was born in 1870 and her demise occurred in hertwenty-fourth year.
In the acquirement of his early education Robert Edward Lee attended thepublic schools of Giles county and was a student in the high school atPulaski from 1904 to 1906. He then entered the Abernathy PreparatorySchool at Pulaski, and he was a student there from 1906 to 1908.Subsequently he entered Strayhom's School at Cornersville and upon thecompletion of his literary course enrolled in the legal department ofCumberland University, which institution conferred the LL. B. degree uponhim in 1917. From 1910 to 1915 Mr. Lee worked in his spare time, in thatway securing funds to continue his education. In 1913 he accepted aposition as bookkeeper with the First National Bank at Port Arthur,Texas, and two years later he was promoted to the position of teller,being active in the latter capacity one year.
In December, 1917, at Pulaski, Mr. Lee enlisted in the United States armyfor service in the World war. He was sent to Camp Johnston, nearJacksonville, Florida, and in February was transferred to Souther Field,near Americus, Georgia. He received his honorable discharge in April,1919, and returned to Pulaski. He has since practiced law here and isenjoying well-merited success. He has won a prominent position at theGiles county bar and handles much important litigation before the courts.He is in every sense of the word a self-made man, for the success he hasachieved is the result of his own labors. At Lewisburg, on the 12th ofNovember, 1919, was celebrated the marriage of Mr. Lee to Miss Della JaneClayton, a daughter of D. B. and Cora Clayton, natives of this state. Mr.and Mrs. Lee have had two children: Jane Clayton, whose demise occurredin infancy; and Robert E., Jr., who was born in 1922. Mrs. Lee is a youngwoman of much culture and refinement and she is prominent in the clubsand social affairs of this community.
Politically Mr. Lee gives his allegiance to the democratic party, havingfirm belief in the principles of that party as factors in goodgovernment. Fraternally he is identified with the Benevolent ProtectiveOrder of Elks and his religious faith is that of the Presbyterian church,in which he is a deacon. Mr. Lee takes a great and helpful interest ineverything pertaining to his profession and contributing to itsadvancement.
