John Lee of Farmington, Hartford Co, Conn and His Descendants

DESCENDANTS OF THOMAS, THIRD SON OF JOHN LEE (pg. 206 in text - pg. 120 in electronic version)

THOMAS, son of John 1, and Mary (Hart) Lee born at Farmington, August 1671, married, first, Lydia Benton, of Hartford. They had twin children who died in infancy and the mother died soon after--about 1700.

He married second, Feb. 11, 1707, Mary Camp of Hartford. She died March 22,1722;

married third, Elizabeth Hubbard who died March 23, 1733;

married fourth, Widow Martha Howard of Windsor. He "owned the covenant" July 11,1708.

In 1697, it was voted that he and four others have "liberty to build thema seat over the short girt at ye easterly end of ye gallery, on the condition that they do not damnify the other seats in the meeting-house."

He was a mason by trade, and a Sergeant in the Farmington Train Band, by which title he is alluded to in the public records. He was appointed Constable by the General Court, an office of note at that time, and considered as the "right arm of the law." By the many transfers found on record, it is evident that he was an extensive land holder in Farmington,New Britain, Southington, Bristol and Avon. He died Sept. 26, 1740.

Administration was granted Dec. 2, 1740 on the "estate of Sergeant ThomasLee" to his eldest son Jared, with his brother Joseph as bondsman in the sum of œ 500. The value of his estate, as appraised by "Isaac Cowles, JohnHart, and John Judd, under oath as the law directs," was œ 917-10-2. These figures did not include the various sums or items previously given to his children. His wardrobe was appraised at œ24-00-2. Among the items were "Broadcloth coat, œ7-10," "old broadcloth coat, œ2-10." "Plain cloth coat10s." "Loose coat œ2." "Leather Breeches œ1-05." "Hollon Shirt œ1-07.""Two woolen shirts œ2." "Black worsted stockings 12s." The family bedding amounted to œ47-01. Included in the table ware, "13lbs good pewter œ7-00,7 pewter plates œ1-06, 2, do. do. œ1-05. 2 pewter porringers 4s." His whole real estate amounted to œ 558, in ten different parcels, among whichwere "one lot over against Waterbury." "11 acres at ye sawmill." His homelot was valued at œ200. He had deeded 250 acres to his sons previous to his decease. "April 10,1745, Jared Lee, admr. of the estate of Sergt.Thomas Lee exhibited his account: Paid indebtedness, œ69-19-1; collected debts œ35-02-6." Children:

MARY, " Mar. 22, 1722; d. in infancy.

Note: Thomas was a mason by trade and a sergeant in the Farmington Train Band by which title he is alluded to in the public records. He was appointed Constable by the General Court, an officer of note at that time. By the many transfers found on record, it is evident that he was an extensive land holder in Farmington, New Britain, Southington, Bristol and Avon. Thomas died 9/26/1740 at age 69. The value of his estate as appraised was in excess of 917 pounds. This figure did not include the various sums previously given to his children. He was the father of ten children, nine by his second wife and one by the third.
